    The Sound of the Shell
    The group of boys arrives on the island dressed in school uniforms. The choir is lined up. The boys create a Democracy. Ralph is elected chief and the choir becomes the hunters. “ Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things.”
  • Fire on the Mountain

    Fire on the Mountain
    The boys begin to argue about the rules, and one of the small children dies in a fire that went out of control. “that little ‘un-... him with the mark on his face, I don’t see him. Where is he now?”
  • Huts on th Beach

    Huts on th Beach
    The boys clothing starts to tear and their hair becomes tangled with branches and dirt. They, especially Jack, become much more focused on hunting. “... his bare back was a mass of dark freckles and peeling sunburn. A sharpened stick about five feet long trailed from his right hand...”
  • Painted Faces and Long Hair

    Painted Faces and Long Hair
    The boys start to paint their faces to hunt, and their hair starts to become much longer. When Jack was busy hunting, he and his hunters allowed the fire to go out while a ship went by. Jack and Piggy argue about the importance of the conch and the incompetence of Jack allowing the fire to go out. Jack breaks one of the lenses of Piggy’s glasses. “Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tickled on the rocks.”

    Ralph calls an assembly to try to get the rules back in order. He explains how important the fire is. The group however disagrees, claiming the pig meat is more important. The meeting breaks up into chaos and the conch/rules are thrown to the side. “The rules! shouted Ralph. You’re breaking the rules! ... Who cares?”

    The group argues about leadership and everyone becomes more fearful of the beast. While some say that it does not really exist, they all seem to agree that there is something strange going on. “You’re a hunter... I’m chief... Don’t argue.”
  • Shadows and Tall Trees

    Shadows and Tall Trees
    While the boy’s appearances are deteriorating, Jack is more focused on hunting than ever. The boys climb the mountain to search for the so-called “beast”. “Then there were his nails... Ralph turned his hand over and examined them. They were bitten down to the quick though he could not remember when he had restarted the habit...”
  • Gift for the Darkness

    Gift for the Darkness
    Jack and his hunters kill a pig pig and leave it’s head as an offering to the beast. They create a ritual and religion on blood sacrifice. “The silence accepted the gift and awed them. The head remained there, dim-eyed, grinning faintly, blood blackening between the teeth.”
  • A View to a Death

    A View to a Death
    The boys savagely kill Simon, but later claim that they thought he was the “beast”. “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!”
  • The Shell and the Glasses

    The Shell and the Glasses
    The only people left in Ralph’s group are Piggy, Sam, and Eric. They give up on the fire and go back to the dilapidated shelters for the night. However, the camp get raided by Jack and his tribe, Piggy’s glasses are stolen so that Jack’s tribe can make fires. “That’s them... They blinded me. See?”
  • Castle Rock

    Castle Rock
    Jack and his tribe get into a confrontation with Ralph because he is trying to regain order. Ralph also expected Jack to give Piggy’s glasses back. The assembly broke up in chaos and Roger began throwing rocks and had his hand on a lever for a trap. He released the lever and a large boulder struck Piggy in the head and cracked his skull, killing him. Jack then begins to torture Sam and Eric into joining his tribe. “Which is better- to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”
  • Cry of the Hunters

    Cry of the Hunters
    The twins are guarding it and refuse to join him, saying tat Jack is after him. Ralph then hides in a thicket overnight, only to wake up to find that Jack set the forrest on fire to “smoke him out”. Ralph runs to beach and passes out. When he wakes a ship has finally arrived. “A naval officer stood in the sand, looking down at Ralph in wary astonishment.”
