    Florida: the 8th state
    Although South Carolina became a state long before the civil war it played a big part in the war. This is where Ft. Sumter took place and they were involved in the Nullification Crisis where they threatened to leave the Union and become their own governement.
  • Andrew Jackson elected president

    Andrew Jackson elected president
    Andrew Jackson was elected president in the antebellum time. This started a period of time which is now referred to as "Jacksonian." This era was a time when political parties began being represented by the "common man." Prior to this it was pretty much a requirement for anyone who ran for president to be wealthy and own a lot of land.

    William Henry Harrison was a general during the antabellum time. Soon after being promoted a general he was soon elected the ninth president of the United States. He is some what unknown because he died only 32 days afterr being elected president.

    The antebellum period began in Louisiana on March 21, 1861. Louisiana joined the confederacy. Upon entering its statehood, Louisiana faced many problems. Much more than other states. This is because the Cajuns felt as if the Creoles were taking over their land.

    General Robert E. Lee was a confederate General. In the begginning of his military career he wished to be on on the Union side and was offered a job as a Union general by President Abraham Lincoln but did not feel comforatable attacking his home state Virginia, so instead he became a general on the Confederate side.

    The Battle of Ft. Sumter is so significant because it was the begginning to the Civil War. The first shot was fired by Confederate Captain George S. James. It was fired around 4;30 a.m. and the gun shots went off every two minutes after that.

    On November 6, 1861 Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president. He won without the support of even one sourthern state.The majority of his term was served during the civil war. The Civil War was not entirely caused by Lincoln's election but it was one of the primary reasons.

    The Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland as a part of the Maryland Campaign. This was the first battle of the Civil War to take place on Union land. To this day it holds the record of the bloodiest single-day battle in America. This battle ended upo being a Union victory which pushed President Abraham Lincoln to announce his Emancipation Proclamation.

    West Virginia: the 35th state
    On June 20, 1863 West Virginia became a state. It became its own state after breaking away from the Confederate state of Virginia and becoming its own Union State.

    The Battle of Gettysburg killed more people than any other battle during the civil war. There were a total of 51,112 casualties.
  • Appomattox Courthouse

    Appomattox Courthouse
    The Appomattox Courthouse was the divider between the Civil War period and the reconstruction period. It was when General Lee took his troops and headed west eventually stopping at the Appomattox Station. They were then surrounded by the Union. They made one last desperate attempt but were forced to surrender to General Grant the next afternoon.

    Although the Union Army is considered to have won the Civil War, they actually lost more soldiers than the Confederate Army. They lost a total of 364,511 while the Confederate Army lost a total of 260,000 soldiers.

  • Andrew Johnson

    Andrew Johnson
    Andrew Johnson was the first president of the reconstruction period after the Civil War. He was left to come up with a plan for reconstruction. He became popular after his amnesty proclomation. His plan was to start a post-war revolution in the south.
  • Texas: still a state

    Texas: still a state
    In 1869 the supreme court came to the conclusion that Texas was going to remain a state of the United States since it had once been part of the Confederacy and Union and then finally owned by the military. They also stated that the constitution did not permit states to secede from the United States.
