"Credit cards allowed people to be more materialistic, my father had one when I was in elementary and middle school, and he had to pay it at the end of the month and thats when we had no money because we spent too much during the month."

Shirley went to an all white school in Saint Petersburg, Florida. She said, "Attending segregated schools was sometimes uncomfortable because you knew the color people were getting treated bad and as a child she didn't know why but it was something that was just normal."

Segregation was determined illegal but it wasn't until many years later my grandma actually experienced things changing.

Shirley explained how after the I have a dream speech everyone was very angry around her, "The blacks were mad because they thought they should be fighting and the white people were mad that they were protesting and trying to change things"

"Everyone around me in school was crying, we were scared and the world we knew seemed to be changing. The world seemed dangerous, at that point, if the president was shot then I thought no one was safe"

Shirley went to Saint Petersburg Junior college, where her freshman year they started unsegregating the school systems. She said, "It was very different to be in class with people of color, everyone was adjusting and it was hard."

Shirley said during the interview, "People started watching fils together in the neighborhood, you would go to a friends house and there would be 20-30 people crowded around the TV to watch the videotape."

The first home video game console was released, and my grandma remembers baby sitting and watching the kids play it, she said it hooked onto the TV and someone kids just played forever.

"The first cell phone was huge like a brick I think it was 2 pounds, but it gave people mobility. They could go further and still be connected to family"
