    During the 1840's, most younger children attended for at least six or more years at school to complete a basic understanding in literacy, mathematics, science, and history. The more advanced children, whose parents could afford it, proceed to grammar schools. It will prepare young men for further education in the profession of law, medicine and the church. Ladies will often attend private schools, if they prefer to specialize in the arts and social graces.

    Many children were put to work at a very young age. In 1844, children aged 11-18 was permitted to work twelve hours per day; children 9-11 were forced to work 8 hours per day; and children under the age of 9 were no longer permitted to work. But, before 1844 both boys and girls started working at the age of 5 and because of the bad conditions they worked under, they would most likely die at 25. Some places they worked at was match factories, construction sights, shipyards, and gas works.

    In the 1850's, there was a National Women's Rights Convention, which was an annual series of meetings that increased women's rights. It was first held in 1850 in Worcester, Massachusetts. It combined both male and females and attracted many peoples support. Also, many peoples attention to show how seriuos this topic is. Many speech were shared on different subjects. They talked about having equal wages, good education, and more career opportunities. This helped many girls gain more freedom.

    First chemical dye discovered
    The first chemical dye was discovered in 1856 and quickly became fashionable. The first two colours that went big were mauve and bright purple. Also, the first pink dye created was named after a battle in Italy's fight for independence. It was called magenta from the Italian town Magenta, Lombardy. They were worn very often. Those colours were the most popular back then and still today they are worn daily.

    First black women to admit to slavery and move to upper Canada
    The writer Benjamin Drew conducted research in Canada in the 1850's to find out about slavery. He also interviewed many former slaves about their refugee experience. In 1865, he published an interview with an elderly women named Sophia Pooley who calmed to have been a slave for many years because she was black. She also stated that she was the first black women to move to upper Canada. By admitting this information she has helped many black people stand up to slavery and make a difference.
  • First telephone that was constructed

    First telephone that was constructed
    In 1877-78, the first telephone was constructed. It become very popular very fast. Over three years later, almost 49,000 telephones were being used. In 1880, bell started to work with different company's to help improve the telephone. After a couple of years the telegraph was formed. This type of technology allowed people to communicate and send messages to different parts around the world. The telegraph became bigger than the telephone, making the bell employes richer and more successful.
