Life at Sea in the 1500s

    Day 1

    Going into the voyage everyone is very happy, saying their farewells in hand written letters or simply waving to them. The families of the sailors had been upset but happy that their sons and brothers were fufilling their duties. Many of them looked hopeful, hopeful that their loved ones would make it back home safely.

    Port Alegre

    Port Alegre
    Discovered by Christopher Columbus on his first trip, which included three ships and a crew of 88. In the 1500's the Portuguese and the Spaniards had indeed recognized that the world was round but knew nothing of it limitations. One Portuguese sailor who finally proved this dream a reality in 1520. We know him as Magallan.

    Port Stanley

    Port Stanley
    Capital of the Falklands, Port Stanley is located on the island of East Falklands. The original capital was Port Louis, north of the present day Stanley. Originally known as "Port Jackson" there are many variations of this port in English and in Spanish. Although the town's name is Stanley it is frequently referred to as Port Stanley, especially during the Falklands War.

    Port San Julian

    Port San Julian
    Port San Julian was given its by the Portuguese sailor named Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan had arrived there on the 31st of March in the year 1520 and overwintered at the harbour. Port San Julian is a natural harbour in the Santa Cruz Province of Argentina. Today Puerto San Julian is also the name of a small town.

    Port Williams

    Port Williams
    Puerto William is a Chilean port and is located in Tierra del Feugo. Port Willams claims to be the southernmost "town" using the term, town, very loosely. Puerto William is considered to be the capital of Antartica Chilena Province. Tierra del Fuego was discovered in the 1500's by Hernando de Magallanes.

    Day 45

    We are getting very close to the south end of South America. Looking ahead I think I can make out grass, a different but pleasant view compared to the deep blue of the sea. Everyone on the caravels had been on edge. I have this sinking feeling in my stomach that once we arive something very bad will strike us.

    Port Ushuaia

    Port Ushuaia
    Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego. It is most commonly regarded as the southernmost city in the world. While there are settlements that are farther south the only honorable mention is Port Williams. Ushuaia is the center of population, culture, and commerce.

    Day 51

    Looking forward I think I can make out a small passageway. I believe that the strait I had so very believed in had finally come true. Taking this route I believe our crew and I will make it much quicker to the Spice Islands and claim the riches in beholds. Knowing this, the crew and I talked over a celebration over whiskey and beer.

    Day 64

    My crew and I have finally entered what is known as the Strait of Magellan. The Strait of Magellan is a passageway that seperates mainland South America from Tierra del Fuego. Our resources had greatly depleated since the beginning of the voyage. Our crew is irratable and impatient for we are very close to the Spice Islands.

    Day 72

    This was a very sad day for every sailor aboard. Today was the day of Christmas and instead of recieving gifts and celebrating today was the day for mourning, mourning over the fallen. Sailors had been looking desperate, seeing that their future was looking less and less promising of making in back alive. This day, everyone had felt a little home sick.
