The daughters of Bilitis or DOB was the first lesbian center organization founded in San Francisco by Dorothy Louise Taliaferro “Del” Martin and Phyllis Lyon. Martin and Lyon would later become the first same-sex couple to be married in San Francisco.

Cooper Do-Nuts was a popular meeting place for gay people. One night in May of 1959 police attempted to arrest three people for legally congregating. This is when a group of transgender woman and others accosiated with the lgbtq community started to throw nearby objects at the police officers.

A police raid happened in Gene Compton's cafeteria, San Francisco. This was a gathering place of transgender people , most of them being transgendered woman. Once the police became violent they fought back.

A five day long riot broke out when a group of police officers forced their way into the stonewall inn, a gay bar. However, once the NYPD became violent the patrons did not comply, instead they fought back. The pride parades months later where used to symbolize the new found freedom of the LGBTQ+ community as well as the events that took place during stonewall.

An artist by the name of Gilbert Baker design and brought meaning to the rainbow flag. Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay elected official requested him to make the flag for gay freedom day in Francisco.

DADT was one of the first official U.S. policy for non-heterosexual people in the military. This policy prohibited military personal from discriminating against gay or bisexual people who kept their sexuality a secret. While banning any openly gay or bisexual people from the military.
