    The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War. Hundreds of British troops marched from Boston to nearby Concord in order to seize an arms cache but Paul Revere and other riders sounded the alarm letting there comrades know that the enemy was near. A confrontation on the Lexington town green started off the fighting, and soon the British were hastily retreating under intense fire.

The battle might have been small but it was one of the first victories for America so it created hope for the US soldiers.

Despite their loss, the inexperienced colonial forces inflicted significant casualties against the British, and the battle provided them with an important confidence boost during the Siege of Boston that the Americans needed.

    Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. The cotton gin was a device that removed the seeds from cotton during harvest. When it was invented many people thought it would help end slavery because the machine did the same amount of work as ten slaves. They were wrong though, because the machine required someone to use it. Cotton became so popular that more slaves were required to run the cotton gins than the number of slaves that were picking cotton by hand originally.
