Lesson 5.3 Learning Assessment: Food Sources & Nutrition

  • Environmental Issues

"Two of the cheapest sources of calories are corn and soy, which the federal government has long subsidized and which make up a large percentage of our caloric intake today (often in the form of high fructose corn syrup or soybean oil)"(Personal Wellness 12). These are two very fatty sugary items that are not healthy to be intaking them on a high regular basis.
  • Environmental Effects

The use of pesticides and fertilizers is common, but a lot of them have harmful chemical that negatively effect the land. "Currently, the "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico, where no fish or other animals can live, has grown to 8,543 square miles" (Personal Wellness 12). This causes the price to increase due to the difficulty to harvest the food. In exchange, companies include more processed food such as corn syrup and cheap materials to get more money for less product.
  • Dietary Supplements

"Supplements are most likely to cause side effects or harm when people take them instead of prescribed medicines or when people take many supplements in combination" (Personal Wellness 11). Yet on the other hand, dietary supplements and aids can help you to acquire all the vital nutrients to stay healthy.
  • Personal Story

One of my close friends has a problem where her body does not process the sufficient amount of calcium even when it is consumed. She has to take calcium supplements and another prescription to help her body to process and absorb the calcium into her body. She has to visit the doctor every month to make sure she is getting the right amount of calcium for her current body condition. This a very positive use of dietary supplements.
