James Sumner invented a steam powered mower in 1893. This machine took paraffin or petrol fuel.

Rotary mowers appeared in 1930 invented by power specialties Ltd. and C.C. Stacy. Stacy's version has a round blade horizontally that mounted vertically.

By 2015 there was such thing as gas and even battery mowers which were a lot more efficient than previous generations. Riding mowers were made to be a lot nicer.
