    hammurabis code

    Hammurabi's code was the first ever written down set of laws recorded on stone tablets. Hammurabi was the king of a city called Babylon that emerged from Mesopotamia and became the trade central of it. during Hammurabi's time as king he created a set of laws for the Babylonian people to follow, these laws prevented people from harming others or stealing/damaging others property and made it so the kings could not just do whatever they wanted to people they did not like.

    justinian code

    The Code of Justinian is a collection of laws and legal interpretations developed under the Byzatine emperor Justinian this code did not constitute a new legal code. Justinians committees of jurists provided basically two reference works containing collections of past laws and extracts the opinions of the great roman jurists. Roman law provided foundation for civil law which is why Justinian code is important today.

    common law, case example: someone steals a year 2000 car and he recieved the same sentence as someone who stole a car of the same year 5 years prior.

    Common law originated in the practices of the courts of the English kings in the centuries following the Norman conquest in 1066.common law was introduced to North America by a group of colonists. it is based off of the rule of precedent and related to how a judge could handle a case similar to a case from the past. The Canadian legal system relies on precedent making it that similar crimes have similar punishments/outcomes. a case example for common law would be

    great laws of peace

    The Great Law of Peace was established in 1190 by Hiawatha. the idea of it was created by indigenous nations as there was a war between nations. Hiawatha proposed the idea to different leaders looking for approval. the discussions had lasted for over a year until they were agreed to by every nation. Agreements were formalized in 2 ways, the wampum belts with other visual records and treaties that were written in settler cultures. The Great Law of Peace is important today because we use treaties.

    Magna carta

    The Magna Carta had introduced the rule of law to England in year 1215. The rule made it so everyone had to follow the same laws with no exceptions. Before the Magna Carta people of higher social rankings such as king queen or any royalty were not required to follow the same rules as everyone else had to. Magna Carta was the reason for the creation of parliament where everyone was in favour of the rule that everyone is innocent until proven guilty just like how it is in our legal system today.
  • French Laws Impact

    The legal system of France has a huge impact on how the law is in Canada. during the French expansion the Britain and French law systems were at conflict which resulted in 2 forms of law to emerge. Quebec is the only province across Canada that has a civil code that is based on the Napoleonic code when the rest of Canada all uses Common Law when sentencing people of their crimes
