Uruguay was originally called Montevideo. It was used a strong military hold by the Spanish when it was founded. The Spanish later used Uruguay’s natural harbor to make an important commercial center.

There were many economic problems and this caused a lot of emigration. Many of the people chose the US and Spain to go to because of better jobs.

First, Uruguay was was claimed by Argentina. After this happened, Brazil added onto it and expanded it. These events would soon create freedom in years to come.

After three years of struggling, Uruguay finally secured their freedom. A major factor in Uruguay claiming their independence is when their nation got build so it increased in size. Since they were a bigger country now, they were able to be free and not be ruled by anyone.

This was a violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement. The slogan that defined this movement was “Words divide us; action unites us.” It eventually stopped in 1992 because the army killed and captured most of them.
