  • I.Q. Test

    I.Q. Test
    Lewis Terman is considered the father of the gifted child movement. Using work on intelligence testing done before him, he created what we know of today as the Intelligence Quotient (I.Q. Test). Terman would go on to study gifted children and published many articles related to gifted education and intelligence including Genetic Studies of Genius in 1925.
  • Special Opportunity Class

    Special Opportunity Class
    In New York, Leta Hollingworth created a Special Opportunity Class for students who were gifted. Out of this class, many publications were created including the first textbook addressing the needs of gifted students entitled Gifted Children: Their Nature and Nurture. The Speyer School for gifted children would also eventually be established in 1936.

    National Association of Gifted Children Created
    The National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) is founded by of Ann Isaacs. This organization is still in existence in present day and works with families and educators to support gifted and talented children through education, advocacy, and research.
  • National Defense Education Act Passes

    National Defense Education Act Passes
    The National Defense Education Act (NDEA) passes and is signed into law by President Eisenhower. This was the first reform movement initiated by the Federal Government in American education. The act focused on improving education in math and science and also provided funding for gifted education. Prompted by the launch of Sputnik in 1957, Eisenhower desired to meet the future needs of National Security by bolstering education.
  • Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth Formed

    Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth Formed
    Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY) was created by Julian Stanley. This organization used the mathematics portion of the SAT test to identify students who could benefit from accelerated learning opportunities. SMPY provided summer workshops to participants on mathematical reasoning and encouraged advanced placement options in high school.

    Nation At Risk Report
    A Nation at Risk reports scores American students and highlighted how they do not measure up with international students. The report emphasized the need for increased rigor in academic standards and that there should be a separate curriculum for gifted and talented students. promoting appropriate curriculum for gifted learners.
  • A Nation Deceived

    A Nation Deceived
    A Nation Deceived report was published. This paper highlighted the need for acceleration of gifted and talented students in the school setting. This paper also showcased research on the many benefits of acceleration for gifted and talented youth. From this work, the Acceleration Institute was formed and this organization continues to advocate for accelerated education and research within the field.
