Needing to equip army units with better artillery, the Army invented a transport with continuous tracks and equipped with two 6-pounder 57 mm naval guns and a .303 in machine gun. Several names were suggested for the device, but the Army settled on MECH-A, a shortened version of Mechanized Artillery.
