    Funan Kingdom Rises and Falls

    Kingdom of Chenla is formed

    The kingdom takes charge of the area for themselves. It is the second known civilisation in the area.

    Jayavarman II forms an empire from smaller states

    Jayavarman II declares independence from a kingdom in modern-day Sumatra and unifies other smaller states to create the Khmer Empire, establishing the capital in modern Cambodia and holding a celebration ritual on Mt Mahendraparvata, which was considered sacred ground.

    Angkor Wat is built

    One of the world's biggest temples and megastructures, Angkor Wat is believed to have been built during this century. It was the pride and joy of the whole empire.

    Cham people defeated

    Jayavarman VII defeats the Cham people ans takes the opportunity to make his empire even larger.

    Religious Unsteadiness

    During this period, there was some unsteadiness on religion within the empire whilst different rulers were in power.

    Buddhism becomes main religion again

    Buddhism becomes main religion again
    After half a century with the kingdom being Hindu, a new ruler resets the religion back to Buddhism.

    When Thai forces attack Angkor Wat, the empire is defeated and it disbands. After over 600 years, a great empie had finally fallen.

    Jayavarman II is enthroned as a "god-king" to be worshipped by the entire kingdom.
  • Indravarman becomes ruler

    Indravarman becomes ruler
    Jayavarman III dies and Indravarman becomes ruler of the empire.

    Jayavarman II dies
    The leader of the Khmer Empire at the time dies, and Jayavarman III is throned.

    Expansion of Khmer Empire

    During this time period, under rule of several leaders, the empire of Khmer expands greatly, expanding beyond the borders of modern Vietnam to create a super-state.
