  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    In the 1870's, due to China weakening significantly, many Chinese immigrants were coming to America. Americans did not want this so they created the Chinese Exclusion Act to keep them from being allowed in America. Developing a large division in race relations.

  • AFL

    The establishment of the American Federation of Labor was meant to improve wages and working conditions. However, almost all blacks, women, and European immigrants were not included in this creating an even larger gap between people by race.

  • Booker T. Washington

    In his speech, Washington stated that blacks needed to accept the fact that the whites were never going to see them as equals. He believed blacks should have their own segregated communities as well to stick together in attempt to keep each other safe. He was one of very few to speak out in attempt to make conditions better for blacks, since the whites would never be concerned about them. He was influential the sense that he simply wanted conditions for blacks to improve.

  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Without a doubt, a huge moment in race relations history since the courts ruled for separation of blacks and whites by making blacks using different facilities than the whites. Also, some business owners reserved the right to deny entrance to any black people. Separate but equal was their label for this racist act, meaning they were claiming to view blacks as equals but also making them use different facilities as they did not view them as equals whatsoever.

  • National Association of Colored Women

    Colored women were excluded from practically everything during this time, and sought to attain better conditions for themselves as they knew it was unfair to be given such few opportunities due to their race. The race barrier appears most prominent in this example in my opinion. This is because members of white women's suffrage groups would not allow any colored women to join or be involved in one of their marches. This shows the race barrier since white women refused to work with colored women.
