    Odysseus's loyal men that have been waiting for him to return show their loyalty by helping Odysseus redeem his title and claim his wife. In return, Odysseus wanted his loyal men to have wives, cattle, and a home next to his. This demonstrates Odysseus's appreciation for these men and his gratitude for having men he can trust. Odysseus ability to be the only one to string the bow shows Odysseus wise and experienced personality. A theme in this section is that hard work an determination pays off.

    The Trojan War

    The Trojan War
    The Trojan war was caused because a prince of Troy had kidnapped Helen, the wife of Menelaus, Sparta’s king. Since Menelaus was so angry, he went to war with Troy for ten years. The Spartans had managed to build a large horse that can hold soldiers in it to trick the Trojans. When the horse was pulled into the city of Troy, the Spartans had emerged from the horse and had defeated Troy.

    Odysseus and his men land on the island of Aeolus, where they stay for a month with the wind King. Aeolus then gives Odysseus and his men a fair west wind blowing the ships toward Ithaca and a bag that contained stormy winds. As Odysseus sleeps, the ships sail to the island of Ithaca but, Odysseus's crew open the bag of wind and the winds push the ships back to the island of Aeolus. The King won't help the crew because he thinks the Gods have cursed their voyage. Odysseus then sails elsewhere.

    Since Odysseus's men betray him by opening the bag of wind, this demonstrates that they let their curiosity get the better of them. Even though they trust Odysseus to get them home safely, they still cause their curiosity to dictate their actions. This causes Odysseus and his men to have to delay their arrival home.

    Circe
    Circe's behavior toward Odysseus and his men show that she is conniving. Even though Circe releases Odysseus's men, she still gets what she wants from Odysseus. Meanwhile, Odysseus bravery and courage through Circe's mischievous ways show that Odysseus takes his men safety seriously and show that he is brave to stand up for his men.

    Lotus Eaters
    The Lotus Eaters story demonstrate how easily distracted Odysseus men could get while trying to sail for home. Meanwhile, this story also demonstrates how knowledge Odysseus is about trickery, such as the Lotus flower, and how important it is for him to get his men back home safely. In other stories, Odysseus curiosity shows but, with the Lotus Eaters, Odysseus knowns how dangerous eating a Lotus flower is. This shows that while Odysseus is brave, he is also smart and cautious.

    Cyclops
    The Cyclops Odysseus and his men encounter is dangerous and eats Odysseus crew members. Odysseus makes a plan to stick the Cyclops in the eye and escape the Cyclops with his crew by his side. However, Odysseus ignorance gets the better of him and he tells the Cyclops his name. The Cyclops then cures Odysseus and makes it harder for to get back home. Odysseus determination to save his crew shows that he puts himself before the crew. Odysseus want to hear the Cyclops offer shows his curiosity.

    Sirens
    Circe warns Odysseus about the Sirens and how hearing their singing is dangerous. Circe tells Odysseus to tell his men to plug their ears with beeswax to prevent them form hearing the Sirens sing. If they do hear the song Odysseus and his men will be doomed. However, Circe does suggest that Odysseus must be tied down to hear the Sirens. Odyssey puts beeswax in his ears and tells his crew to tie him down as the Sirens come. As Sirens sing, his crew pulls him tight and then the Sirens swim away.

    Scylla and Charybdis

    Scylla and Charybdis
    Odysseus's decision to take the path in which Scylla is on than Charybdis shows his good strategy skills and shows his determination. He knew that if he were to take the path in which Charybdis was on, he and his crew would not have a chance to make it home. While Scylla takes six of Odysseus men, Odysseus did not want to pay the price of having everyone killed by Charybdis. This also demonstrates Odysseus endless protection for his crew and his ability to problem solve.

    Odysseus is warned to not eat Helios' cattle for Helios, the sun god, will be angry. As important this is, Odysseus warns his men about Helios's cattle and then tells them that they can not eat his cattle. However, Odysseus's crew don't listen to him and they ate the cattle anyway. Once Helios is aware of this destruction, he insist payment should be made for the lost cattle. Meanwhile, to satisfy Helios, Zeus sends a thunderbolt down to sink Odysseus ship. Only Odysseus survives.

    Odysseus's men ability to not have self discipline to not eat Helios' cattle shows that they are not as wise or smart as Odysseus. Odysseus warned his crew not to eat Helios' cattle because he is aware of the danger and he doesn't want his crew to make a terrible mistake. This demonstrates Odysseys trust in his men and this shows how cautious Odysseus is. A theme to take away form this story is to not let ignorance get in the way of a goal. Odysseus's men let ignorance stop them from their home.

    This evidence show how one bad act can cause a war between two kinds of people. The Trojans and the Spartans have both fought in a long war over the kidnapping of a Helen, whom Menelaus found the most beautiful. However, after the man made horse was pulled into the city of Troy, the Spartans were destined to attack and defeat Troy.

    Circe
    Odysseus and his men land on the island of Aeaea where Circe lives. Some of Odysseus's men go to the home of Circe and she invites them in. After the men drink a potion that was given to them by Circe, they all turn into pigs. This made Odysseus come to Circe's home and make a deal with her to not drink or eat unless his men were turned back. Odysseus had to stay with Circe until she agreed to let him and Circe told Odysseus that going to the underworld will help him find directions to his home.

    Odysseus and his men came upon the coastlines of the place where the Lotus Eaters lived. The Lotus Eaters lived upon the Lotus flower. Odysseus and his men stayed alongside the shore for a mid day lunch. Then Odysseus chose two men and a runner to discover more about the people who had inhabited this place. The men came into contact with Lotus Eaters who had offered them the Lotus, which is a plant to make one forget. However, Odysseus quickly took the men back to the ships and they all left.

    Cyclops
    Odysseus and his men landed on area where the Cyclopes are located and discover the Cyclops items in the cave. While exploring, Odysseus men proposed a plan to steal the Cyclops items and make a run for it but, Odysseus wanted to hear an offer from the Cyclops. After the Cyclops returns, he eats a few of the crew. Odysseus sees his mistake, plans to get the Cyclops drunk, and stick it with a sharp spike. Odysseys succeeds his plan and escapes the Cyclops but, Odysseus is cursed by the Cyclops.

    Sirens
    Circe warns Odysseus about the Sirens because the Sirens are dangerous and have destroyed a lot ships. Circe doesn't want that for Odysseus so she tells him how he and his men can avoid this danger. Circe also suggest a safer way for Odysseus to her the Sirens singing. Her telling Odysseus a safer way to hear the Sirens singing demonstrates that Circe knows Odysseus curiosity might lead him to wanting to hear the Sirens singing.

    Scylla and Charybdis
    While Circe tells Odysseys the horror in coming across Charybdis, she suggest that Odysseus and his men take the path in which Scylla is in. Charybdis is a whirlpool that will spew up and suck down Odysseus's crew but Scylla is a six-headed monster. Odysseus didn't tell his men about Scylla because he didn't want them to panic. As Odysseus's crew come up on Scylla, she attacks taking six of Odysseys best men. As they scream in pain, Scylla takes the the men as if she was fishing for a meal.

    As the only one who survived the journey, Odysseus returns to Ithaca disguised as a beggar. The Suiters have taken advantage of Penelope's hospitality and want to marry her. A game is held to choose the husband for Penelope and at this time the Suiters are in charge. Odysseus revels himself too two of his loyal followers and they help him defeat the Suiters. Odysseus is the only one who can string the bow, he shoots the lead Suiter, and him and his loyal men destroy all of the Suiters.
