Harry S. Truman was president until 1953. When he was in his presidency, television was very new and still developing. In 1947, he became the first president to address the American public on television. -
Transistor is invented, spurring growth in computers and electronics.
Bell Telephone Laboratories created the transitor in 1947. The transistor could amplifies, controls, and generates electrical signals Also, the transistor was like a vacuum tube but not as big or heat- generating. It could be used in many electronic devices. -
President Eisenhower and Congress add the words “Under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance.
Since their was a threat of nuclear war and we just got done with two wars, many people became closer with their religion. In effect, the words “Under God” were put into the Pledge of Allegiance. Also, the words " In God We Trust on American currency. -
Polio vaccine announced to the world by Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Thomas Francis.
1954, Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Thomas Francis tested a vaccine to prevent polio, It was successful, and then it was given to the public. Sadly, it was created after the death of F.D.R. who had suffered from polio throughout his life. -
• The first nuclear power plant in the U.S. goes online at Shippingport, Pa.
The navy had produced the first nuclear-powered submarine. This technology made it possible for a nuclear power plant to be produced on land. It was produced in Shippingport, Pa. -
NASA is established.
After Sputnik, many Americans grew concerned that the United States was losing its competitive edge. Also, they thought a nuclear attack from the Soviet's was coming. In response, NASA was created in 1958. NASA stood for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This organization explored space.
