Muhammad Ali refuses military service
- June 20, 1967: Muhammad Ali was convicted for refusing to fight in the Vietnam war: 5 years in a federal penitentiary and a $10,000 fine
- many people followed his example and saw him as a hero
- Ali:"Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs?" -Martin Luther King:"He is giving up millions of dollars to do what his conscience tells him is right."
