    Native Hawaiians Settle
    Native Hawaiians have settled on the island of Kaho'olawe. They continue to migrate South of the Pacific. The island is dedicated to Kanaloa, the god of the ocean.
  • Goats

    Goats
    Goats are introduced to Kaho'olawe. It was a gift from Captain Vancouver to King Kahekili of Maui.
  • Ranching

    Ranching
    The Hawaiian government issues many ranch leases on the island. The uncontrolled grazing of cattle, sheep, and goats resulted in substantial loss of soil. By the late 1890s, there were 900 cattle and 15,000 sheep on the island.
  • Bombing

    Bombing
    The attack on Pearl Harbor had bad results for Kaho'olawe. The U.S. declared martial law, which led to the bombing range of the island.
  • No More Bombs

    No More Bombs
    President Dwight Eisenhower declares that the island is to be transformed into a "suitable habitat". It is now no longer needed for the military.
  • P.K.O.

    P.K.O.
    Members of the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana begin a series to help halt bombing. In 1977, the Federal District Court orders the navy to start an impact statement to protect environmental and historcial sites.

    Kaho‘olawe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also designated the Kaho‘olawe Archaeological District.

    As a result of the PKO actions, George Bush Sr. orders to stop the bombing of Kaho'olawe.
  • Ownership Transfer

    Ownership Transfer
    In 1994, the Navy transfers the ownership of Kaho'olawe to the state of Hawaii. K.I.R.C. is established to manage activities on the island.
  • Clearence of Bombs

    Clearence of Bombs
    The US Navy ends the Kahoʻolawe Clearance Project. It cleared approximately 75% of the island's of surface. Of this area, 10% of the island or 2,647 acres were additionally cleared to the depth of four-feet. 25% or 6,692 acres were not cleared and unescorted access to these areas remains unsafe.

    Crops
    Many crops have been planted on Kaho'olawe. Food has been a strong establishment on the island.
  • Full Restoration

    Full Restoration
    Hawaii starts to really help restore Kaho'olawe. They get funds and start sending more people to the island to restore.
  • Bomb Clearence

    Bomb Clearence
    All of the ordnances from a four foot depth have been cleared. The entire island has been checked over and dispensed of bombs. They found shards and even large ordnances.
  • Life

    Life
    Kaho'olawe has been almost entirely restored. People and animals have been once again introduced. Life is now habitable and contains farms / crops.

    Restored
    The island is completely restored. People now live on it and have a happy time. This island is a great place to visit and supplies some of its own food.
