    <a href='http://www.historicacanada.ca/content/heritage-minutes/underground-railroad?media_type=41&media_category=' Between 1840 and 1860, more than 30,000 American slaves came secretly to Canada and freedom. The slave owners were on the hunt for their runaway slaves. Harriet Tubman leads the slaves to Canada. George Brown was also an anti-slavery founder.     Canada is Born
    Before the 1840's, Canada was named, Upper Canada and Lower Canada. But this was soon to change. Upper Canada and Lower Canada are renamed Canada East and Canada West and are combined into the province of Canada. Kingston becomes the capital of canada. A memorible day for all living within Canada at that time. A united kingdom makes a strong Nation.

    Montreal merchants think that the government is paying for property damage during the rebellion. It is actually a way of the government admitting the rebellion was just a milestone. On april 25th, 1849, anglophone conservatives burn the parliament building to the ground.

    William Lyon Mackenzie moves back to canada from exile in the United States. He started the rebellion that made canada what it is today, so in my opinion, he is one of the founders of confederation. (Exact date is not available. We just know that it was in May of 1850).

    Some more information about the Underground railroad: There were 2 sides to this situation. Some citizens in Canada wanted the slaves/black people to go back to where they came from. Because of this, the black people started a community of just black people. They made an army to defend Calafornia's rasist laws and possible attacks. Rasism and black division from white people has gone a long way down in history. (This is not the exact date but this continued throughout the 1840's-1860's)

    Canada's first postage stamp is issued, a three-penny stamp with a beaver on it. (All we found out was that the date was in 1851, but we know that it was after British North America got their stamp)

    Chinese immigrants from California arrive in British Columbia, attracted by the Fraser River Gold Rush. Just the start of South Asian and Middle Eastern population within Canada. (Don't know the exact date, only the year)

    Tubman and the Military
    Harriet Tubman was the first woman to command a military raid. She guided Col. James Montgomery and his 2nd South Carolina black regiment and liberated over 700 slaves. Harriet Tubman was also a nurse to the black soldiers in the Civil War previous to this year. (Don't have exact day but we have year and month)

    Charlottetown conference begins.
    Charlotte town conference begins. The discussion? Confederation of all the colonies into one big nation.
    The Maritime Provinces decided to hold a meeting about forming a union between Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The Province of Canada sent delegates to this meeting in Charlottetown in September. Among them was John A. Macdonald who was one of the principal speakers in favour of a federal union.

    The Quebec conference begins. In Quebec Macdonald defended the federal scheme with two strong arguments - the advantages that would result from the separate colonies coming together under a strong central government and the need of maintaining British institutions and the parliamentary system. It wasn't easy for Macdonald to sell his ideas to all of the people. But, due to his persuasion and convincing, his ability to find a compromise, the delegates agreed on the terms of Confederation.

    The fenians begin raiding British North America in hopes of drawing British troops away from Ireland. Surprise attacks, plans, and destruction of towns and cities, takes place due to the Fenien attacks. British and Canadian citizens, as well as troops, prepare themselves for the on coming attacks.

  • The Act of British North America

    The Act of British North America
    The Act begins with a preamble that declares that the three provinces New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and the Province of Canada (which would become Ontario and Quebec) have requested to form "one Dominion...with a Constitution similar in Principle to that of the United Kingdom". This description of the Constitution has proven important in its interpretation. As Peter Hogg wrote in Constitutional Law of Canada, some have argued that since the United Kingdom had some freedom of expression in 1867,
