Near the beginning of slavery, free Africans had almost the same rights as the English. One of these rights is that they could own land, and even have slaves if they desired. This helps to give a clear understanding of just how much progress diminished during slavery.
  • Court Case Part Two.

    Court Case Part Two.
This event helps us to clearly see the diminishing progress that what happened during this terrible time in history by showing us that at the beginning of slavery the English and Africans were treated equally in court. Later on in slavery however, even if an African was even allowed in court, they had absolutely no chance if they were against a white man.

This is when slavery starts to spiral into the terrible thing we see it as today. This law stated that even if an African has been baptised they could still be a slave for life. This law shows the greed for power over the Africans that the English had.

Since the law stating that baptism does not exempt from bondage has been passed there are now very few ways that land owners could punish there slaves. Before that law, land owners would punsih there indentured servants by extending how long they had to serve them for. That law almost certainly inspired the casualy killing of slaves law.
  • Casual Killing of Slaves Part Two.

Casual Killing of Slaves Part Two.
The casual killing of slaves law states that if a slave has done something wrong and they happen to die while their master is punishing them then their master is not charged with a felony. So even if someone killed their slaves on purpose they could just say it was an accident and not be charged with anything. Another aspect of this law is that this is the first law that designates slaves as their owners property, which is very important in showing diminishing progress.
  • Hog Stealing Part Two.

    Hog Stealing Part Two.
This law stated that if a slave stole a hog they would recieve thirty nine lashes. At this time it was believed that forty lashes would kill you. If the slave survived this and was caught stealing another hog they would then they would spend two hours in the pillory with their ears nailed to it. After the two hours expired they would then cut the ears of the offender off close by the nails.

  • Hog stealing. Part Three

    Hog stealing. Part Three
This dreadful law shows that the English are now reverting to a harsh, crude form of torture to keep the fear in their slaves.
  • Conclusion.

    Conclusion.
Slavery wasnt meant to be the monster we view it as today. It was a horrible systematic passage of laws taking advantage of things like weakness and pain, as to only benefit a few people. Slavery helps us clearly see the greed and lust for power often seen in humans today. As an american citizen help make sure that nothing like this can ever happen again by trying to view new laws from all angles.
