The Conderate government demanded the Union soldiers in Fort Sumter evacute. The Union refused which led to at 4:30 AM on April 12, 1861, Confederates under General Pierre Beauregard open fire with 50 cannons upon Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. This is the beginning of the Civil War.

The Confederate soldiers led by General Thomas J. Jackson defeat the Union soldiers led by General Irvin McDowell 15 miles Southwest of Washington. 30,000 inexperienced Union troops attacked a smaller, equally inexpierenced Confederate force. The Yankees drove the Confederates back at first.The rebels then rallied from reinforcements under General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and broke the Union lines making the Union troops retreat.

The two ironclad ships of the Union and Confederates met off the coast of Virginia.Neither ship could sink the other but it was historic because it was the first ever battle between metal-covered ships.

General Lee and the Condederates attack General McClellan and the Union soldiers In Richmond, Virginia. Both armies suffered great losses. After 7 days of combat McClellan withdrew his troops and retreated back to Washington.

75,000 Federals under General John Pope are defeated by 55,000 Confederates under General Stonewall Jackson and General James Longstreet in Northern Virgina. The retreating of Union soldiers back to Washington ended this battle.

Union and Confederate soldiers met near the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Union led by General McClellan and the Confederates led by General Lee. 6,000 soldiers were killed in total. The Union won the battle.

Gen. Lee moved his troops our of Maryland into Virginia. This encouraged new Uion commander, General Ambrose Burnside, to march his troops to the Confederate capital in Richmond. Gen. Lee heard of the plans and entrenched his army in the surrounding hills south of Richmond and drove back the Union army. Gen. Burnside then resigned.

Vicksburg, the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, surrenders to Gen. Grant and the Army of the West after a six week siege. With the Union now in control of the Mississippi, the Confederacy is effectively split in two, cut off from its western allies.

This battle occurred in a small town in southern Pennsylvania call Gettysburg. The Union and Confederate armies "accidentally" encountered each other and a battle broke out. The Union being led by Gen. George Meade and Confederates by Gen. George Pickett. The Union won the grueling battle which ended wiht 3/4 of the men that started the battle laying dead or wounded.

Grant had a plan to to destroy Lee's army at this battle. But when a Union Corps did not arrive on time and Grant had to postpone the attck a day, this left time for Lee to entrench his army. When Grant did attack. His army was layed to ruins.

This battle took place at a railroad center in Petersburg, Virginia. Gen. Grant wanted to take the railroad center to cut off supplies to Richmond. The Confederates defended the attack and held the Union back for 9 months.
