  • Beginning of Barbary Wars

    Beginning of Barbary Wars
    The US had been paying "tribute" to barbary pirates to guarantee safe travels on the Mediterranean Sea. Jefferson wanted to stop that practice. In 1801 the Pasha, title for a high-ranking Turkish officer, chopped down the American flag at the US embassy in Tripoli. For four years there is a quasi-war. When it ended, we no longer had to pay tribute, but we did pay a ransom for American prisoners.

    The Supreme Court issued its opinion on William Marbury's appointment to the federal court. Cheif Justice John Marshall used the case to strengthen the power of the federal government. The opinion gave the Supreme Court the authority to determine the constitutionality of all federal laws.

    Louisiana Purchase
    Before Spain transferred their land to France, they rescinded right of deposit at New Orleans. Western farmers, dependent on that access to sell crops, demanded Jefferson take action.

    Jefferson is faced with a possible war with France or losing significant political support.

    Aaron Burr kills Alexander Hamilton in a duel
    New England Federalist believed they were losing power as the country expanded.Some Federalists wanted to secede and form a northern confederacy. They believed they needed New York for the plan to be successful. It is rumored that Aaron Burr would agree to secede if elected governor of New York. Hamilton accuses him of treason and is mortally wounded when Burr challenges him to a duel.

    New England realized their power in government was weakening as the country expanded. Some Federalists proposed that New England states secede to form a northern confederacy. They needed New York to be successful. It is rumored that Aaron Burr agreed to secede if he were elected governor. Hamilton accused Burr of treason. Burr loses the election. Burr mortally wounds Hamilton in a duel.

    During the Napoleonic Wars, neither France norGreat Britain wanted the other to trade with the US. The Continental System forbade any ship that stopped at a British port from entering a port in Europe. Great Britain responded with a blockade around Europe.   • Chesapeake Leopard Affair

    Chesapeake Leopard Affair
    Great Britain began impressing US sailors into the British Navy. Britain claimed they had the right to stop ships and search them for deserters from their Navy. When the USS Chesapeake refused to allow the Leopard to search, they were fired upon and forced to surrender. Jefferson removed British ships from American waters.

    Legislation that prohibited US ships from leaving US waters bound for any foreign port.
