Foreshadowing Conversation
I was visiting with my Uncle who, at the time, was a paraprofessional in a high school SDC class. Knowing I was working towards a career in education, he told me to look into teaching in the Special Education field. The teacher he worked under possessed many similar personal qualities that he always found in me. -

Period: to
Plumfield Academy and Traveling Europe
Burned out from job and was not sure if working in the educational field was what I wanted to do anymore. I traveled around Europe for a handful of months and, at the end, decided I wanted to return and get a job back in a school setting. -
Graduation from UCSC
With graduation approaching, I reached out to a non public school in my hometown. They specialized in teaching individuals with Emotional Disturbance and Behavioral issues. I was stressed about finishing college without a job lined up, and this opening seemed to be a good fit in regards to bridging the gap between college and a credential program. -

Deaf-Blindness
The child not only has difficulties
learning due to disabilities in both sensory systems but
also because of neurological impairments. Depending
on the extent of the conditions, the child may have
severe to profound intellectual disabilities, may show
higher ability levels with some intellectual disabilities,
or may develop without intellectual disabilities -
Intellectual Disability
Most common causes of moderate, severe, and
profound intellectual disabilities are biologically based,
occurring between the time of conception and birth,
and about 75% of the causes can be linked to a specific
origin, including genetic disorders, chromosomal
anomalies, abnormalities of brain development, substance
abuse, maternal infections, and other pregnancy
problems. -
Autism
On the autism spectrum,
the disorders vary in the nature and degree of
their manifestation. The most recent prevalence estimate
for individuals with ASD is 1 in 88 in the population, and it is increasing. -
Down Syndrome
Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common syndromes
associated with intellectual disability. It has an
incidence of about 1 per 691 live births. -
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
FASDs form the largest class of birth impairments
that can be 100% prevented by not drinking
alcohol during pregnancy.
