  • The Declaration of Independence was signed!

    The Declaration of Independence was signed!
    The Declaration, which was signed to declare that the states were finally free from Brittan, was signed on July 4th in 1776. This was the start of the 'new world'. After the Continential Congress signed it, we finally declared indepence from Brittan. It gave all the reasons why we were departing from Brittan. Some of those reasons include expensive taxes and being forced to house soldiers.
    This is important because this is one of the few documents that really defines being an American.

    The Cotton Gin is Invented
    Elli Whitney's invention, the cotton gin, was invented. This allowed cotton to be sorted through easier for the seeds. This ultimately helped the production of cotton in America and increased the demand for slaves to pick said cotton. This also helped the Northern textile mills to mass produce cotton.
  • The Trail of Tears

    The Trail of Tears
    Throughout 1838 into 1839, President Andew Jackson passed a legislation forcing all Indians out of their homes and into present day Oklahoma to make more room for Americans. The Indians traveled on many different routes, dependent on what tribe, and the Oregon trail was called the Trail of Tears that the Cherokee Native Americans were forced to walk on, into the unknown.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was a 3 day battle that took place at Gettysburg. This was an accidental battle- noises of conflict had been heard between the Confederates and the Union soldiers, eventually causing them to break out in bloody fighting that lasted 3 days. This is important because these were some of the bloodiest days of the American Civil War. There were many casualties here that have caused the town of Gettysburg to be a famous tourist site.
  • Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln

    President Abraham Lincoln was shot just behind his left ear with a derringer pistol, held by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln had been watching "Our American Cousin" in Ford's Theater with his wife and two engaged friends. Lincoln was taken to a house across the street and died 11 hours later. This is important because this shows the fall of what could have been the best friend of the South. Lincoln had great plans for reconstruction that would fail to be completed because of his absense.

    Chinese Immigration Exclusion Act

    This act was created to ban Chinese (and all Asains) from immigrating to the United States. This act was passed because many Americans felt like their jobs were being stolen by the hard-working Chinese.
    This is important because this act effected many people already living in the US, who's families couldn't come over, and it also effected those who wished to come over from Asia for a better life but couldn't.

    Ellis Island is Born for the Immigrants
    Ellis Island was created in New York harbor for immigrants to come to America. In the immigration station, immigrants were checked for disease and then let through. Once through, they could exchange money and get train tickets or wait for family. Ellis island made it possible for immigrants to come to America in an orderly fashion. This is important, or else the population in America would have become very large and food would grow scarce and jobs as well. Also, they avoided disease.

    Thanks to a stock market crash, many Americans were put into debt and poverty, just managing to survive each day with only a little money in their pockets.

    World War II

    World War II was fought between Germany, Italy and Japan vs Britain, France, Austrailia, Canada, New Zealand, India, Soveit Union, China, and the U.S.A.
    This is important because a lot of people died and it brought the US some enemies and some allies.
    At least 60 million people died. This was over 2.5% of the world population at the time.

    Atomic Bombing on Hiroshima, Japan
    During World War II an American bomber dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, wiping out nearly 10,000 people, 8,000 on impact and tens of thousands later after too much exposiure to radiation. Japan surrendered after being bombed a second time in Nagasaki, losing up to 4,000 more people.
    This is important because it shows that we as Americans can be dangerous and that the government will protect its people, no matter what.

    Martin Luther King Jr's I Have a Dream Speech
    Martin Luther King Jr' led more than 250,000 people on a peaceful march to the reflection pool and lincon Memorial. On the very steps facing the reflecting pool, he delivered his famous 'I Have a Dream' speech.
    This was an influential event because it gained black people the respect from white people and ultimately began to stop segregation.

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964
    The Civil Rights Act ensured that all people could vote, not just wealthy white men. Women were also to get paid the same amount of money for the same job as men. Black people and women could now vote, wealthy, or poor.
    This was important because it really stopped segregation and allowed everyone to vote and be counted as a person.

    My Birthday!
    As a middle school student, I enjoy writing and reading and I like to be with my friends.
    I was born in Ephrata Hospital.
    My parents are divorced, so I have a step-father and a father. I live with my step-dad and mom, and currently have 2 dogs. My step-father has lynphoma cancer, my mom works at my school, I have a twin sister, and I have the best big brother in the world!
    This is an infulential day because I was born, and I can make a difference in the world.

    Terrorist Attacks on 9/11
    In New York City, two hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers, killing more than 3,000 people. Another plane also struck the Pentagon, also hijakced by a terrorist group in an attempt to kill a lot of people. This event really shaped America so that we are ready and protective of our citizens. It brought us all together. Did you know?
    The date was specifically picked out to attack because 911 is America's distress call, and the terrorists thought this would make everything perfect.

    *Stock Market Crash of 1929
    Wallstreet investors traded some 16 million dollars in exchanges on the New York Stock exchange in a single day. Billions upon billions of dollars were lost, wiping out industries and buisnesses quickly. This is important because America lost a lot of money, and this ulitimatly led to the Great Depression.
