    Italy became a nation-state in 1861 under the ruler of King Victor Emmanuel II. Victor Emmanuel gathered the deputies of the first Italian Parliament. On March 17, 1861, the Parliament proclaimed Victor King of Italy. On March 27, Rome was declared capital of Italy.
