Muhammad was born in Meca, a desert settlement with a spring that was ignored by the Parisian/Roman war. It was the site of an annual religious pilgrimage to the "Kaabah", a large cube containing over 360 deities, which represented the beginning of creation and the center of the earth.

His parents died when he was an infant, so his clan and relatives raised him. He travelled Arabia and neighbouring countries to trade with his uncle, where he earned the titles of "the trustworthy one" and "the righteous one". Because of these titles, he was hired as a caravan leader by a wealthy widow who soon became his wife and the mother of his six children.

On Mount Hira, where he often went to meditate, he was visited by the Angel Gabriel who commanded him to begin reciting. Gabriel told Muhammad the words of Allah, which Muhammad remembered word for word due to his state of ecstasy.
