    First colonization.

    In 400-100 BC Ireland is invaded by tribes of Celts, these people were coming from the area which is now known as France. These people divided the country into provinces between them. These provinces were ruled by an elected king, and there is no central power.

    St. Patrick

    Ireland was christianized by St. Patrick, who was the patron saint of Ireland. In the wake of Christianity there is a flourishing of culture/learning connected with the churches and the monastaries which spreads to other parts of Europe.This early Christian culture helps account for the power of Catholicism in Ireland to this very day.

    First British colonization.

    With out a central power, and the sudden need for one, one of the local kings in Ireland called for help among the Norman kings in England in 1169. The Normans, however, stay in Ireland and the British colonization of Ireland , which was to last four centuries, starts. Gradually the old Gaelic order is ousted by the Anglo-Normans, who bring an entirely different culture and society with them. A feudal way of organizing society with feudal lords and centralization replaces the old system/culture
  • Act of Union: 1800

    The Act of Union brought into existence a political entity called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The act abolished the parliament in Dublin, providing instead for Ireland to be represented at Westminster by four bishops and twenty-eight peers in the house of lords and by 100 elected members in the house of commons.
  • Famine and emigration

    In 1845 a phytophthora infestan, destroys the potatoes that the Irish rely on. The result is a crisis which becomes known as the Great Famine.Two problems that occured was one that is political, was that there was a rapid repeal of the protective Corn Laws, which kept grain prices in Britain artificially high, which have been the subject of passionate debate for years. The other is the starving families that were taking on the chance of a new life in America.
  • Vikings Invade

    Vikings from the Nordic countries invade the island and threaten the Celtic culture and society. It is in this period cities like Dublin and Cork were founded. Eventually the Vikings settle down on the island. Which is when many become farmers and gradually assimilate with the original population.
