Rallies, strikes, and protests force Mohammad Reza Shah to turn power over to vice president, Shapur Bakhtiar.

Khomeini sets up Islamic Revolutionairy Council and calls for overthrow of Bakhtiar.
--Bakhtiar allows Khomeini to return to Iran.
--Shortly afterwards, the Iranian Army stopps supporting the government as many soldiers join the demonstrators.
