Inventors/Innovators Timeline

  • John Kay

    John Kay
    1. Invented the Fling Shuttle, in 1733 2.The Flying Shuttle allowed a single person to weave much wider fabrics and it could be mechanized, allowing for automatic machine looms.Although if you were using different patterns using the Flying Shuttle it wouldn't be worth the trouble. 3.There still around but now the machine is automated.( Ran by machines)

    Inventor/Invention Date

  • James Hargreaves

    James Hargreaves
1.Invented the Spinning Jenny, in 1764
2.There were now 80 spindles instead of 8, which meant it now could now increase the speed of weaving and be more efficient.A down side was that the Spinning Jenny had low yarn strength, it was difficult to keep spinning conditions constant.
3.It is still used today in The Hobby Industry.
  • Richard Arkwright

    Richard Arkwright
1.He invented the Water Frame, in 1769
2.The machine was water powered. It made thousands of cotton threads at once. The downside of the Water Frame was that it replaced the before women's jobs. Also that they allowed unskilled workers to work on the machines.
3.In today's world we use it to spin wool and alpaca.
  • Samuel Compton

    Samuel Compton
1.Invented the Spinning Mule, in 1779
2.It produced high delivery speeds and gave a smooth yarn appearance. The disadvantages were that the yarn was low in strength, had a high tendency to snarl and had high air consumption.
3.Today it is used to spin woolen yarns from noble fibers such as cashmere, ultra-fine merino and alpaca for the knitwear market.
  • James Watt

    James Watt
    1.Invented the Photocopier, in 1780
2.It produced an exact copy of a an image/piece of paper.A disadvantage would be that it wasn't accurate for transportation.
2.The modern photocopier is used in business's, education and government sectors.
  • Robert Fulton

1.Invented the Steam Boat, in 1807
2.Some advantages were that it carried passengers from NYC and upstream to the capital of New York, Albany.A disadvantage was that it could accumulated to much pressure and explode.
3.Today we use modern transportation like boats, trains and cars.
  • Richard Trevithick

    Richard Trevithick
    1.Invented the locomotive, in August 12, 1813
2.It's advantages were that the locomotive transported goods, had an amazing speed and was very reliable. The downside was that it caused pollution and children had to work on these locomotives.(Child labor)
3.Today we still use these machines.
  • George Stephenson

    1.Invented Stephenson's Rocket, in 1829
2.The machine was built for a competition that was held to determine the best locomotive design.(To update the present locomotive)This allowed them to produce the best kind of locomotive.Once it was invented the locomotive produced large amounts of pollution.
3.We now use trains for transportation.
  • Henry Bessemer

1.Established the first cost-efficient process of steel, in 1856.
2.Steel has a high strength level, is tough and can be recycled. On the downside it energy intensive to produce and costly to the distributor.
3.Today we use steel products in things like the construction of roads , railways and other infrastructures.
  • Louis Pasteur

1.Came up with a way to show that food spoils because of microorganisms(Pasteurization), in 1864.
2.Some advantages were that we now new how to kill harmful bacteria that tend to grow in dairy products, especially in the absence of refrigeration. Also the discovery allowed milk to be consumed less immediately and prevented many illnesses. There were no disadvantages in Pasteur's experiment.
3.We have been able to keep food edible without refrigerating it through his theory.
  • Thomas Edison

    1.Invented the Phonograph, in 1877
2.You could now record an send sound on tinfoil coated cylinders (Which meant you and someone else could have a conversation at two different locations). Although the Phonograph did some times produce shocks and the sound wasn't very clear. Also there weren't as many face to face conversation.
3.Today we mostly use cell phones to communicate.
  • Nikola Tesla

1.Invented the Tesla Coil, in 1891
2.Some advantages were that it could transform energy and produce energy. The disadvantages were that it produced shocks and ozone poisoning.
3.Today we still use these to wirelessly transmit electricity and make electron winds.
