  • The Band-Aid

    The Band-Aid
    The band-aid was created by Thomas Anderson and Earle Dickson a Johnson and Johnson employee. It is said that Earle Dickson's wife was clumsy and always getting hurt, this at home bandage allowed people to easily bandage minor injuries at home without having to apply an adhesive before hand as it came on the Band-Aid.

    The 1920's were a time of major change in values, culture and technology. The innovations of technology in the 20's are an important part of our history and modern technology. Whether it changed the convenience in peoples lives or greatly changed them.
  • First American Radio Station

    First American Radio Station
    The first American commercial radio station was KDKA who were licensed on October 27, 1920 and first went on air on November 2, 1920. This was the beginning of public radio.
  • The Lie Detector (Polygraph)

    The Lie Detector (Polygraph)
    Medical student at UC Berkeley by medical student John Larson. The polygraph, commonly known as the lie detector, detects changes in blood pressure, skin conductivity, pulse and breathing to tell indicate nervousness.

    The first automatic watch (self winding) was created by John Harwood and patented on July 7, 1923.
  • Commercial Frozen Foods

    Commercial Frozen Foods
    United States business man Clearance Birdseye went traveling to Canada and noticed that the locals froze their food so they could have more fresh foods during the winter. He quickly came back to the U.S. and started commercially flash freezing and selling meats and vegetables. He would later go on to event refrigerated glass display cases in the 1930's.

    Geiger-Muller Counter
    Often shortened to Geiger Count, this device detects beta and gamma radiation. This was created by two scientists, Hans Geiger and Walther Muller. We still use Geiger Counters today.

    After years and years of experimentation, scientist Robert Goddard started flight test on his liquid fuel rocket in 1926. His hope was to get to the moon with his rocket, and although that didn't happen until 1969 (after his death) his research was the beginning of more modern weapons and in space exploration.

    Although it did not catch on in the 20's due to it's inconvenience and expense, the first prototype was created by Bell Laboratories in July of 1927. Bell Laboratories was founded by Alexander Bell.
  • Antibiotics

    Antibiotics
    The life saving drugs developed from mold and bacteria were discovered by Alexander Fleming a professor of Bacteriology at St. Mary's Hospital in London. His development of penicillin in 1928 is often called the dawn of the antibiotic age.
  • The Iron Lung

    The Iron Lung
    The Iron Lung was the first respirator created by Dr. Charles F. McKhann for polio patients who often died because the virus would cause their chest muscles to paralyze. This machine worked in the place of their chest muscles in breathing, allowing them to hopefully heal. This was the basis of the modern respirator.
