  • The Water Frame

    The Water Frame
    Richard Arkwright patented the first water frame in 1768. John Kay had the original design but sold it to Arkwright who went on to make the system work. The water frame allowed cotton fibers to be easily spun into cotton thread.
  • Sewing Machines

    Sewing Machines
    Thomas Saint was the first to patent a design for a sewing machine. Elias Howe was the first to create it however, in 1845. They allowed cloth to be mass produced
  • Steamboat

    Steamboat
    The patent for the steamboat was granted to John Fitch August 26th 1791. He received the patent after a dispute with James Rumsey, who had a similiar design. Steamboats made river travel easier, quicker and more affordable
  • The Railroad locomotive

    The Railroad locomotive
    Richard Trevithik built the first succesful locomotive in 1804. The locomotives allowed people and goods to move quicker from city to city and helped encourage settlement in the west.
  • National Road

    National Road
    In 1806, Congress funded the building of a major east-west highway. Laborers started cutting the roadbed in 1811. It carried pioneers moving west with oxen and wagons.
  • Erie Canal

    The Erie canal was first proposed in 1807, under construction from 1817- 1825, and officially opened on October 26th 1825.

    Baron Schilling created the first electromagnetic telegraph in 1832 in Russia. Later, Samuel F.B. Morse created Morse Code to help communicate vast distances
