Olympic Games open in Los Angeles
Despite the boycott of the Games by the U.S.S.R, Cuba, and many Eastern-European nations, the '84 Oylympics were viewed as a success. The majority of the world was able to unite together and prove that the unity is a good thing. The Games also showed a new way to run the event for profit. Space Shuttle Challenger explodes
The Explosion of the Space Shuttle ,"Challenger" served as a shock to the world and a major setback to NASA. The explosion resulted in the deaths of seven crew members (6 astronauts and 1 teacher). "Black Monday" Stock Market Crash Occurs
The Crash of 1987 is known as the largest single day drop in stock market history. "Black Monday compelled investors to rethink the popular buisiness model of seeking to aquire as many other companies as possible. In one day, $500 billion was lost from the market. Exxon Valdez Oil Spil Occurs
In 1989 the Exxon Valdez Oil Tanker struck a reef and spilled 11 million gallons of oil into the water off the coast of Alaska. It would cost the lives of countless animals and $2.1 billion before a majority (not all) of the oil was cleaned up. Central Committee of Soviet Communist Party reliquishes power
The Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party determined that it would no longer keep a stranglehold on governemental power. With this decision, the Communist Party found itself open to political challenges for the first time in 70 years. 27th Amendment to United States Constitution is Passed
The 27th Amendment was passed on this date. The importance of the 27th Amendment in respect to how it enables and regulates the "business" of legislation cannot be overstated. The 27th Amendment prohibits Congress from voting a pay raise for itself retroactively or for the current term. Standoff in Waco, Texas Begins
The 1993 standoff between the Branch Davidians and the U.S government helped to bring to light both issues of cult/commune behavior and police militarization. NAFTA Goes into Effect
The North American Free Trade Agreement was a new experiment in international business. NAFTA connected Canada, the United States, and Mexico by immediately removing tarrifs and scaling back of other prevenative measures that had been in place to restrict trade between these three countrries.
