    Timeline of the Internet

  • DARPA took first physical steps to build "ARPANET"

Lawrence G. Roberts and the crew at DARPA refined the plan and released an RFQ for a packet switcher.
  • First node is connected to ARPANET at UCLA

Due to Leonard Kleinrock's work with packet switching UCLA is chosen to be the first node.
  • Standford Research Institute, USCB, and UU, were added to the ARPANET

  • NCP is created.

NWG worked under S. Crocker to create the first host to host protocol on the ARPANET allowing applications to be developed.
  • ARPANET is presented to ICCC

Kahn presents ARPANET to the public for the first time.
  • Email is created

Ray Tomlinson wrote a very basic email software that was expanded on by Roberts later that year.
  • TCP/IP is first introduced

Kahn and Vint Cerf worked in collaboration to bring Kahn's plan to TCP/IP to life which functioned as a communication protocol.
  • Ethernet is developed

Ethernet is developed throughout 1973 by Bob Metcalfe at Xerox PARC.
  • "A Protocol for Packet Network Interconnection" is published

Fathers of the internet Kahn and Cerf publish this describing TCP design.
  • 1980's bring widespread PC use

Loads of PC's were connected to the Ethernet which caused need for a lot of change.
  • TCP/IP adopted as defense standard

DARPA adopts TCP/IP to allow defense sharing through the internet and leads to the partitioning of military and non military internet communities in 1983.
  • DNS is invented

Paul Mockapetris recognized the need to find IP addresses and invented the DNS system.
  • ARPANET transfers from NCP to TCP/IP

On January 1st 1983 everyone was told to transfer simultaneously to the new TCP/IP or be left behind.
  • US NSFNET is made and announces to be available to all college students

The only US network that's intent is to available to the "general" public.
  • Dan Lynch and IAB hold workshop for vendors on TCP/IP

Over 250 representatives came and started a decade long communication between researchers and vendors to support innovations.
  • Steve Wolff takes over NSFNET program bringing critical changes

-Set policy for federal agencies to split cost of infrastructure
-Built the Federal Internet Exchanges to monitor interconnection points
    -Formed the Federal Network Council9.
  • NSF seeks out commercial sector

NSF began telling regional networks to find commercial non academic applications
  • IETF is formed

IETF is formed to develop and promote standards that make up internet protocol
  • First Interop trade show

Showcased how different products could inter operate seamlessly with one another, this show now is held at seven locations across the globe per year.
  • HTML is developed

Tim Berners-Lee develops HTML which largely shapes how we interact with the internet today.
  • CERN introduces World Wide Web to public

Tim Berners-Lee and CERN release world wide web for public usage.
  • First Audio and Video is published on the internet

Audio and video is published online and "surfing the internet" becomes popular and possible.
  • W3C was created

World Wide Web Consortium is created and develops many protocols for the WWW
  • Realizing the Information future: The internet and beyond is published

NRC report with Klienrock as chair and Kahn and Clark as members that set the blueprint for the information super highway to come.
  • NSFNET Backbone is Defunded and redistributed competitively

NSFNET is defunded and funds are redistributed to regional networks to buy national connectivity from long haul internet providers.
  • Match.com launches

    First online dating site!
  • Google is born

The search engine google is born.
  • IPv6 is introduced

IPv6 is introduced which changes the old 32 bit IP address to the new 128 bit IP address to accommodate the amount of internet users in today's world
  • Facebook goes online and social networking is born

Facebook sweeps in a new era of communication
