    College Union Regatta formed
    First ever collegiate sporting conference formed. Rowing conference with four teams: Harvard, Yale, Brown, and Dartmouth. They competed against each other in rowing competitions.

    Amherst vs. Williams. Amherst won 73-32, used "Boston baseball" rules. 13 men on the field, no foul balls, one out per inning, no gloves were used.

    First Intercollegiate Football Game. Rutgers vs. Princeton. More of a soccer type game. Players kicked the ball but were allowed to pick the ball up and run with it. Rutgers won, 6-4.

    Held in Cambridge, Massachusetts between Harvard and McGill University of Montreal, Canada. This shows American colleges adopting European sports. A coach for the McGill rugby team was James Naismith who later went on to create the game of basketball.

    In an effort to draw a line between college and professional baseball, the northeastern clubs formed an association. This Association folded in 1887 due to a lack in organization. Baseball was the most widely played sport before football got its start.

    Walter Camp of Yale, created his own set of rules for American football. The rule changes included the line of scrimmage, 11 players on the field, and set up a regulation size field to play on. After these changes, American Football was born.
