Interactive Special Education Process Timeline

  • Disability Suspected (School District Child Find Requirements)

    School district is to assure that "any child who is potentially a child with a disability is evaluated and eligibility for special education is determined prior to the child's third birthday" (NH Rules, Ed 1105.04, 39).

  • Referral

    Once a child is is determined a possible canidate for special education, he or she is given a referral in order to provide an FAPE. (for students ages 2.5-21 years). While there is no time limit for creating the referral, the referral must indicate, "a process for referral and evaluation which includes individual participants responsible for decision-making and implementation" (NH Rules, Ed 1106.01, 41).
  • IEP Decision

    Within fifteen days of the referral, the IEP team must determine whether the concerns for the child can be met by the services available, or if more information needs to be provided. Also, the IEP team decides what testing should be done, if any.
  • Written Notice to Parents

    Withing fifteen days after the referral, the IEP team also needs to provide parents with a written notice of its disposition of the referral which includes procedural aspects and possible request for consent to testing if needed.
  • Evaluation

    An intital individual and full evaluation must be done and it must be completed within 60 days after receiving consent from the parents.
  • Determination of Eligibility and Disability Category

    The student is classified as having one of the fourteen disabilities listed in the IDEA.
  • Evaluation Report

    The IEP team writes a summary of the results of the initial evaluation. There is a copy made for parents as well. It is during this time that it is determined if a reevaluation is necessary.
  • Individualized Education Program

    An IEP is developed. An IEP is a, "written statement for each child with a disability that is developed, reviewed, and revised in a meeting" (NH Rules, 1109.01, 57). Copies must be sent out to each educator who interacts with the child.
  • Placement the Least Restrictive Environment

    The child must be educated alongside children without disabilities and will only be removed from that situation when extreme circumstances occur.
  • Ongoing Progress Monitoring

    The IEP is updated every school year and the student's progress is monitored.
  • Triennial Evaluation

    Every three years, the current disability category is reevaluated to make sure it still applies.
