    In America slaves were greatly needed because of the work on plantations and farm. In totat, 12 million slaves were brought to the Americas. Eventually, countries started banning the Atlantic Slave Trade and it ended.

    Portgual was one of the first countries to start shipping African slaves to places. New slaves stopped coming, but the remaining ones stayed slaves for the rest of their lives.

    Cotton Gin is Invented
    Cotton Gin was invented by Eli Whitney. It is a machine that seperates the cotton seed from the fiber. This invention helped to strengthen slavery.

    Slavery stopped because more people started believing in moral rights and the need for it wasn't as great as before. In 1832 2/3 of the parliament who supported slavery were fired and people who were against it came in.

    The Amistad Trial were over men who wanted their "property" (the Amistad family) back and lawyers who wanted to help these slaves. In the end, the slaves were sent back to their homeland with money which people had raised to help them. There was a movie made by Steven Spielberg in 1997.

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise was created by Henry Clay, a 70 year old US Senator. The Compromise was that there would be slavery in the newly gained land at Texas, but they would be given 10 mil dollars to pay of their debt to Mexico, also Calfiornia was a free state and there was no slave trade allowed in Washington D.C. To make other politicians happy, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. This compromise was meant to keep the nation united.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    This law stated that all citizens were required to help find free slaves and if they were found, they had to be sent back to their owners. The slaves didn't get a trial. This law was a disaster to slaves which were free and were trying to make lives in the North of the US. This act made activists work even harder to put an end to slavery.

    American Civil War

    This war was when America split into two parts, the Southern Confederate States who believed in slavery and the Northern United States who were against it. The Confederate states were formed when Abraham Lincoln became president. The war was brutal and over 620,000 soldiers of 2.4 million died. In the end the Northern States won and slavery was abolished.

    Abraham Lincoln created the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War. It stated that all slaves within the Confederate States were free and from now on shall always be free. Although the document was pretty much useless against states which were still part of the US, it moved many people and gave a real meaning to the Civil War

    These were the laws which put the African Americans as second-class citizens. These words were laws which were full of anti-black statements which became a way of life. These words included things like Blacks weren't allowd to show public affection and a Black man could not shake hands with a white man.

    Brown vs Board of Education- US Supreme Court Case
    This was a series of 5 cases which were each about the segregation of public schools. The end decision of the jury was unanimous with all of them choosing that the segregation was "unconstitutional. This event helped move along the equality of America.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    A 14 year-old Chicagoan boy was said to have whistled at a a lady named Caroline Bryant, who was married. A few days later, Till was kidnapped, beaten, shot, and dumped in the river. The all-white jury didn't press charges. Nowadays, the murder is considered a major event in the unfairness of the Black descremination.

    African-American Civil Rights Movement

    This movement started with a bunch of boycotts, the most famous being when Rosa Parks "the Mother of the Civil Rights movement" sat at the front of a bus and wouldn't move to give a white man her seat. This movement was all about splitting the boundaries between colored and white people, and having a fair equality everywhere in the US. One of the leaders and heroes was Martin Luther King Jr. whose death was avenged by many.

    US Ratifies 13th Amendment to Constitution
    The 13th Amendment was the first to have passed in over 60 years. It abolished slavery and made it so that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This was made because Lincoln and co. didn't belive that the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't strong enough to stop slavery and that an amendment would be needed.
  • Freedom Riders Movement

    Freedom Riders Movement
    In this movement, a group of activists would go against the Jim Crow Laws which affected transportation. The activists sat in the front of the bus, stood in the "whites only" waiting rooms at bus stops, etc. At first, nothing affected them, but eventually people started slashing their bus tires and hurting the riders. The activists sent more people who were also hurt and evenutally they had to stop.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Assasination

    Martin Luther King Jr. Assasination
    At 6:01 in the morning, King was shot by a sniper bullet with the shooter never found. King was a famous civil rights leader and his death caused great disruption in the masses including a massive wave of riots. Nowadays he has a holiday on the third Monday of every January.

    Mauritania was the last country to ban slavery. Even nowadays though, there are still slaves and only one slave owner has ever been punished. About 10- 20 % still live in slavery (340,000- 680,000)
