Infant Development

  • 1-3 months

    1-3 months
    physicaly able to move arms and legs together and keeps hands fisted of slightly open. They coordinate eye movements. They recognize a parent’s voice.
  • 4 months

    4 months
    They can maintain a sitting position for several minutes if given proper support. They look from object to hands to object. They enjoy watching hands and feet. They express delight.
  • 5-6 months

    5-6 months
    while on back, they can lift their head and shoulders off surface. They can grab objects with either hand. They smile at self in mirror. They may be able to play the peek-a-boo game.
  • 7-8 months

    7-8 months
    They achieve sitting position by pushing up with arms. They are able to pick up small objects and string. They anticipate events. They show desire for social contacts.
  • 9 months

    9 months
    They sit alone. They use index finger to point, lead, and poke. They respond appropriately to a few specific words. They like to play games like pat-a-cake
  • 10 months

    10 months
    They like to walk holding caregiver’s hands. They can release grasped object instead of dropping it. They speak first recognizable word. They cry less often.
  • 11 months

    11 months
    They stand alone. They like to grasp feeding utensils and cup. They can wave good-bye. They recognize the difference between being good and being naughty.
  • 1 year

    1 year
    They walk with one hand held. They may show preference for one hand. They can point to body parts. They begin to develop self-identity and independence.
