    In February of 1839, slave traiders abducted slaves from Sierra Leone and shipped them over to Havana. This violated all treaties at the time. The slaves were then purchased by spanish planters and put apon a ship called the Amistad destined for a plantation in cuba. The africans later captured the ship and ordered the crew to sail to africa, but as the ship neared Long Island, NY, the crew was saved and the african slaves were charged with murder.
