    Upon the opening of the minefields, demand for tools such as shovels, picks, and the various pieces of equipment needed for refining gold. Thus, companies such as BHP made huge amounts of money from providing the materials needed to create these tools.

    Gold Rushes bring wealth and population booms in Sydney and Melbourne. With these people, these cities suddenly grew larger, rivaling cities all around the world. These people also brought with them new technologies that furthered the advancement of Industrialisation.

    Gold Rush Drives Business

    WIth the ever-growing need to repair and replace mining tools, and espicially steam engines, foundries and engineering companies sprang up everywhere to compensate the need. In 1856, Scott Clow and Prebble opened the first cast-iron foundry in Melbourne. In 1860, Enoch Hughes established a rolling mill in Melbourne and later would play a huge role in establishing Iron and Steel works. By 1861, Ballarat had ten foundries, for producing mining equipment and producing and repairing farm labour tool

    Steam Engines Employed for Mining

    Steam Engines began to appear on the minefields to assist with the mining process- for things like draining water, steam engines were an invaluable assistance. Thus, steam engines cropped up on goldfields all over. For example, in Ballarat, the number of steam engines grew from 13 in 1855 to 342 in 1861.
