    The Indian nations were getting in the way of the American's Westward Expansion and economical progress, and were pushed out of their land and forced to move.
  • Invasion on Natives' Territory

    Beginning in the early 1840's, the whites started passing through the Indian's land, upsetting the Natives and causing conflict.
  • Indian Wars

    Indian Wars
    Beginning of many conflicts between Native Americans and the United States. These wars were caused by Manifest Destiny and the anger of the Natives from the Indian Removal Acts
  • Bozeman Trail

    Bozeman Trail
    The Lakota tribe wanted to protect their trail from the invasion and passing of the whites, which caused some miscommunication and rivalry between them.
  • Treaty of 1868

    Treaty of 1868
    This treaty recognized the Black Hills as party of the Sioux territory and resolved some conflicts between the U.S. and Natives.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Transcontinental Railroad
    The First Transcontinental Railroad was built which allowed for better transportation. This also caused some conflict with the Indians because the Treaty of 1868 was violated as the railroads were built on their land.

    Shooting of Buffalo
    With the railroads came the widely popular sport of buffalo shooting. The whites would travel on railroads and shoot from the trains.
  • Buffalo population decrease

    The shooting of the buffalo almost caused an extinction of the species. The Indians were enraged because they were dependent on the buffalo for not only their food, but also religious ceremonies, clothing and shelter.
  • U.S. won Black Hills

    U.S. won Black Hills
    After a long tough battle with the Native Americans for the Black Hills, the U.S won the territory. With this came gold.

    The Battle of Wounded Knee, also known as the Wounded Knee Massacre, left hundreds of Sioux dead.This marked the end of the conflict between the Natives and U.S. After this, Natives were more tolerated by the Americans.
