The British colonized India bit by bit and controlled all of India by the 19th century. -
Independence
Some famous politicians such as Gandhi and Nehru started some nonviolent resistance, it payed off - and in 1947 India became independed. -
The Indian literature
If you're looking on the literature side of all this - the british presence influenced the Indian authors on their language, especially in the 1980-90 - many Indian authors began writing in english - eventhough it was decided in 1936 that the authors should write in their own language.
