    Milestones

    The French Revolution had a great impact on the colony. St. Domingue’s white minority split into Royalist and Revolutionary factions, while the mixed-race population campaigned for civil rights.
  • The Free Slaves of Color

    Half of them (slaves) were mulattoes. Slaves wanted nothing to do with the mulattoes if possible
  • Slave Revolt

    Slave Revolt
    A slave revolt erupted on the French, a former slave took control of the rebels.
  • The Maroons

    Had a large group of runaway slaves who went into the Saint - Domingue mountains. They lived in small villages (subsistence farming, kept the old African ways).
  • Slave Rebellions

    Both white and people of color, feared the slaves. Involved harshness and cruelty of slavery in Saint-Domingue.
  • The End of the Haitian Revolution

    Competing factions battled for control of the then-capital of St. Domingue, Cap-FrançaisEvent Six.
  • France Recognition

    Jefferson refused to recognize Haitian independence, a policy to which U.S. Federalists also acquiesced. France finally recognized Haitian Independence in 1825.
  • Haiti’s Status Recognition

    France recognized Haitian independence, Haitians would have to wait until 1862 for the United States to recognize Haiti’s status as a sovereign, independent nation.
