  • European Coal and Steel Community - Europe

European Coal and Steel Community - Europe
The European Coal and Steel Community, or ECSC, is an organization that was made to allow free trading between the participating countries. France, Germany, Italy, and Benelux were the countries that signed the treaty and allowed free trading of coal and steel thoughout and between their countries. Once the treaty was signed, other countries wanted to join and Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands did.
  • European Coal and Steel Community - Europe

European Coal and Steel Community - Europe
This affected the present day because now the metal and ore products can be bought anywhere by anyone. ECSC affects us now because workers in the metal industries had to be paid a certain amount and that helped out a lot of families when prices skyrocketed and people went out of work.
  • European Coal and Steel Community - Europe

European Coal and Steel Community - Europe
This symbolizes that Europe is starting to recover after WW2. It’s significant because the treaty allowed for all the countries to buy steel and coal from whomever they choose. The treaty lasted 50 years and ended in 2002 Steel, coal, iron ore, and scrap metal were all part of the treaty too. The ECSC also monitored how much of certain products were bought and shipped from where to where. ECSC had the ability to fine and penalize different companies.
  • Hydrogen Bomb - US

    Hydrogen Bomb - US
In 1952 , the United States used the first hydrogen bomb in a test area to see if that was a promising area of research. This is significant for the United States history because it was a new development for bombing and destroying opponents. It also gave them the advantage in the “race” to make more bombs than the Soviet Union. The hydrogen bomb opened up many new opportunities and ideas for more dangerous bombs and weapons.
  • Hydrogen Bomb - US

    Hydrogen Bomb - US
This is a significant event because it is part of what helped the United States to win the "race" against the Soviet Union. If we hadn't won we might have been taken over by the Soviet Union and life would be very different. Additionally, the hydrogen bomb was a sign that scientists were starting to think outside the box and that we were getting somewhere in the field of weaponary. Hydrogen bombs weren't common in the 1950's so people were impressed and frightened by the successful creation.
  • Hydrogen Bomb - US

    Hydrogen Bomb - US
This affects us now because if the US hadn’t made that discovery than we might have lost the “race” to make more bombs and then the Soviet Union might have thought they had a huge advantage and bombed us. The present is also affected because now the Soviet Union is disbanded and the United States is still going.
  • DNA Structure Discovered - Europe

    DNA Structure Discovered - Europe
This affects us now because scientists have made many discoveries based on that one and they have worked to make those new discoveries help people. They’ve researched how DNA gets passed down and now they can choose to have a baby have certain traits and characteristics that might have died out without help because they were recessive and dominant traits kept covering them. Life would be different because we might have more people and families that were plagued by heretic diseases.
  • DNA Structure Discovered - Europe

    DNA Structure Discovered - Europe
This is when James Watson and Francis Drick discovered that DNA was shaped like a twisted ladder made up of several components. The discovery of what DNA looked like was a huge success for the British scientists. A fancier name for the shape of DNA is double helix structure.
  • DNA Structure Discovered - Europe

    DNA Structure Discovered - Europe
That was an important discovery for science because it is part of the trait giving process when a baby is born. It also led to the discoveries of how to predict what traits a child will have and how to tell if a baby will be a carrier for a heretic disease. Students now learn about DNA and how traits are passed down so they can be better informed about heretic diseases that may run in their families.
  • Joseph Stalin Died - Europe

    Joseph Stalin Died - Europe
Joseph Stalin passed away on this day. He was a big part of WWII. At first he had helped Adolf Hitler, then afterward he went to help the Soviet Union. A cerebral hermorrhage was what killed Joseph Stalin.
  • Joseph Stalin Died - Europe

    Joseph Stalin Died - Europe
The death of Joseph Stalin was big news in Europe that year because he was a main leader during WW2. Stalin also sent many people to labor camps so he wasn't liked by many. Somehow, he remained a leader until he died. People were happy he died and it gave them moral support.
  • Joseph Stalin Died - Europe

    Joseph Stalin Died - Europe
Joseph Stalin dying was a big event in Europe because he was a main leader in WW2 and then was head of a powerful group until he died. People were happy when he died because he ruled with an iron fist and sent many people to labor camps that were far up north. He exiled people and executed them while he was in command. Life would be different if he had survived a little longer because he may have been apart of more wars and killed many more people.
  • Polio Vaccine - US

    Polio Vaccine - US
Polio was a very harmful disease at the time. It had even affected Franklin Roosevelt. From 1942, to 1952, 60,000 cases had been reported throughout the world. But, 3,000 people had died in the United States alone. Fortunately, many people had survived the disease. But, many were left paralyzed for the rest of their lives. Doctors and scientists made this vaccine and it saved many lives. The vaccine started in Pittsburgh, PA and it went to many different countries before the sickness went away.
  • Polio Vaccine - US

    Polio Vaccine - US
Polio affected our country by making it weaker for a period of time because people started getting sick and then they couldn't move from the waist down. This was in the top five because our president had it and the illness affected many people across the world. Polio is one of the worst diseases because you are stuck in a wheelchair and you need help for everything.
  • Polio Vaccine - US

    Polio Vaccine - US
This affects us now because if the vaccine had not been made, many people would be infected by Polio, and many of us would be paralyzed. Polio was all over the world. Not just the U.S. was infected, it was all over the world. China, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and many more were plagued by this illness. But with this vaccination, Polio was stopped and now we live safe from this paralyzing disease. Life would also be different because less people would be able to work, so we wouldn''t have as much.
  • West Germany Joins NATO - Europe

West Germany Joins NATO - Europe
This is when West Germany joined the organization North Atlantic Treaty Organization. That is the event that ended the occupation of American, British and French forces. Those countries were worried that West Germany might be defeated by the Soviet Union and then the SU would start taking over Europe.
  • West Germany Joins NATO - Europe

West Germany Joins NATO - Europe
This affects us now because if Germany hadn’t been armed and started to protects its borders might have been conquered if the Soviet Union had tried to expand its territory. That’s important because if the Soviet Union got more powerful, they might have started to take over Europe and the US might not have grown to be one of the most heavily armed countries like it is now. Life would be different because we might be a dictator country instead of a democratic country.
  • West Germany Joins NATO - Europe

West Germany Joins NATO - Europe
West Germany joining NATO was influencial at that time because it was a sign that they agreed with the French, British, and Americans that the Soviet Union shouldn't have Europe under it's control. Additionally, West Germany citizens were most likely relieved that soldiers were leaving their country and they didn't have to be afraid in their houses anymore. NATO was a group that wanted Europe to not fight and to be nice to each other. West Germany joining them meant they wanted peace.
  • Rosa Parks Stand - US

    Rosa Parks Stand - US
This caused people to stand up for African American rights. By her doing this, it had changed the whole look on the black community. Rosa Parks had started the whole fight for equality between the two races. The Rosa Parks stand helped the first bill on civil rights to get signed two years later.
  • Rosa Parks Stand - US

    Rosa Parks Stand - US
We are affected by this event because now all the races in the US have equal rights. It also affects us because now we know that people have the courage to stand up for what they believe and it can inspire others. Life would be different if that hadn’t occurred because now everyone is used to having mixed races in schools and other public places but if Rosa Parks hadn’t done that, we may not have ever accepted other races.
  • Rosa Parks Stand - US

    Rosa Parks Stand - US
This is when Rosa Parks finally stood up to get the equality they deserved. When Rosa Parks was alive, African Americans were required to sit in the back of a bus. One day, Parks was sitting in the front of the section for African Americans and the white person section was filled up, so Parks was told to give up her seat. She refused to give her seat up to a white man. Parks was arrested and put in jail.
  • Civil Rights Bill - US

    Civil Rights Bill - US
This Civil Rights Bill was the first step to get African American citizens the same rights as white citizens. This also gave African American people the right to vote. That helped them gain independence by voting along with the rest of the population. The bill was signed by President Eisenhower in April of 1957and it gave African American citizens the right to vote for who the president would be.
  • Civil Rights Bill - US

    Civil Rights Bill - US
This affects people during the present because now all American citizens have the same rights and there is no discrimination. This bill also helped people to see that all citizens deserve the same treatment. During the following years, more bills were passed to give all citizens the same treatment. Life would be different if those bills weren’t passed because we would still have black and white bathrooms and sections on the buses. There would be other examples of segregation if it still existed.
  • Civil Rights Bill - US

    Civil Rights Bill - US
President Eisenhower signing the Civil Rights Bill was a historic moment for our country because it was the first time that African Americans were reconized by the US as equals. This bill allowed them to finally be allowed to vote for the president and have their opinions count. Also, our country wouldn't be as diverse as it is now because people from other countries might not have moved over if their opinions didn't count. Our country wouldn't have foods and clothing from other cultures.
  • Explorer 1 Launched - US

    Explorer 1 Launched - US
Explorer I was the first craft to ever be launched into space by the U.S. Explorer I had caused a huge breakthrough into the development of understanding space. This was very important to people in the United States, because learning how to make a satellite to be able to properly get to space, can advance the U.S. in getting more satellites to discover our galaxy and solar system a lot better.
  • Explorer 1 Launched

    Explorer 1 Launched
This affected the present day because now there are many satellites in the atmosphere. They do everything from taking pictures to broadcasting TV channels. Life would be very different because people wouldn’t be able send an email and have someone else get it seconds later even if they are on the other side of the world. We would have to wait for weeks or even months to get information from far away countries and wars would take much longer and more people would die.
  • Explorer 1 Launched - US

    Explorer 1 Launched - US
Explorer 1 was not the first satellite to be launched but it was the first one the the United States sent up. This was an important time in US history because it was the first of many satellites that we would send up. Now those satellites help us to communicate and stay entertained. Satellites also help us to discover more of the galaxy we live in. Astronomers now know that there are eight planets in our galaxy and that they all have at least one moon.
  • European Economic Community - Europe

    European Economic Community - Europe
The EEC was signed by Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and what was at the time West Germany. These countries signed the EEC the year before but it didn’t take place until 1958. EEC is a group that tried to allow free movement of labor and goods. The organization went on to determine the common price levels of agricultural products.
  • European Economic Community - Europe

    European Economic Community - Europe
It affects us now because the EFTA was based off i and that helped to expand the free movement of goods and labor. It also helped to stabilize the agricultural demands and prices. Life would be different without it because European farms and businesses that deal with food would have been overrun by other businesses that could afford to have lower prices and then jack the prices up when they were the only supplier. The EEC helped to stabilize European food markets.
  • European Economic Community - Europe

    European Economic Community - Europe
The European Economic Community is an important organization because helped some of the countries of Europe to get over WW2. The participating countries worked together and didn't think of one another as Allie powers or Axis powers, they thought of each other as partners and they treated each other like that as well. This treaty also helped the coal and steel industries because they were able to sell more products to different countries that didn't have as much of that material.
