  • Dutch East Indies

    After the Dutch gained land from the Portuguese, they discovered tin and oil and took over them. The Dutch East Indies was the named called when they had the chain of islands in Indonesia.
  • U.S Notices Hawaii

    When Hawaii was a port on the way to China and East India, the U.S took notice of Hawaii.
  • Sugar Trade

    The sugar trade started to change the economy in Hawaii, the production of the sugar-cane plantations was a success by the Americans. By the mid-19th century, the wealth for the sugar plantations rose for 75%. Political power was also gained in Hawaii the same time the wealth rose.
  • The McKinley Tariff Act

    The McKinley Tariff Act was passed by the U.S government which removed the tariff on sugar arriving the U.S. The sugar in Hawaii was not cheap anymore, business leaders made amove that by making Hawaii part of the U.S meant that the sugar in Hawaii would get greater profits when sold.
  • Queen Liliuokalani

    Queen Liliuokalani called for a constitution to increase her power, with that the political power of Hawaiians would also be restored but by the price of the planters. This was avoided by some American businessmen who plotted to overthrow the Queen, and in the same year she lost power.
  • Sanford B. Dole

    A rich plantation owner named Sanford B. Dole, and politician was declared the new president of the new Republic of Hawaii, he asked the U.S to rule over Hawaii but President Cleveland declined.
  • Spanish-American War

    Spanish-American was what got the U.S the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Filipino nationalists were not happy by the one colonizer trade and claimed the U.S promised independence after the war has ended, and so nationalist's independence was declared and the Philippine Republic was recognized.
  • Struggle between U.S and Filipino

    The struggle between the U.S and the Filipino nationalists started, and got defeated in 1902. The U.S promised self-rule to the Philippine, and the U.S prepared to keep this promise but sadly this led to food shortages for the Filipinos.
