In the 1820s the Hawaiian economy changed of the rising amount of sugar plantations and sugar trade. They became 75% of Hawaii’s wealth after the Americans started to promote them. The American plantation owners start to take over governmental power.

After the McKinley Tariff Act was passed by the U.S. government sugar production changed to what is worse and started a crisis. It ended the tax paid on all of the Sugar imported in the U.S which made it the same price as all of the other sugar. The U.S took part of the Hawaiian land.

Sanford B. Dole, a wealthy American plantation owner and politician became the Hawaiian President. He asked the United States to rule Hawaii, president Cleveland disagreed.

Hawaii became a part of the United States after President Cleveland’s refusal because of President Sanford B. Dole’s proposal.

After the Spanish American War, the United States gained rule over the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Filipino’s were not happy about the result of the war having to get a different colonizer. Independence was declared after this war by the nationalists not the Americans.

The United States had trouble with the Filipino nationalists after the Nationalist’s declaration of independence, they promised self-rule but the Americans didn’t follow through their promise.

After they defeated them they developed the Philippines through education and reconstruction then after the money was gained they sold most crops, which led to famine for the Filipinos.
