Beothuk and european contact 1

Impacts of Cultural Contact

  • Prior to Contact

    Prior to Contact
Beothuk lived in New Zealand, they hunted and fished for thier food. The Europeans came into contact with the Beothuk during the 1500's-1600's. They had made a system called "silent bartering" which was a system to trade goods.
Later on more Europeans moved into the Beothuk territory taking over their access to the water. Then the Beothuk became more dependant on beaver and Caribou but still snuck into European territory for fish which eventually lead to clashes between the two.
  • European Fur Traders

    European Fur Traders
The Beothuk had used the Bison primarily for furs, food, clothing, shelter and tools. Then they met up with the Europeans and both cultures realized that the other had what they wanted. Eventually they both started trading which led to the "silent bartering". The Europeans had pots, weapons and tools and the Beothuk had furs that they traded.
  • Europeans begin to Arrive to Expand Settlement

Europeans begin to Arrive to Expand Settlement
Once the Europeans were on the Beothuk territory they started to move Westward into the territory and make a settlement. The result was loss of bison which took away traditions and food source for the Beothuk. The Europeans and the Beothuk interactions increased in turn the balance between the two shifted and the Europeans started taking over the Beothuk. Recently after the Europeans had made a treaty with the beothuk that they relied on for their survival.
  • Effects Experienced Today

    Effects Experienced Today
[Current Effects on Aboriginals](www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g5GcqOmKC8)Some of the effects of cultural contact between the Beothuk and Europeans are:
Unemployment rates for the Aboriginals ages 15-24 is 17.8% and for non-aboriginals is 9.6%.
Acheiving a Bachelors degree for Aboriginals is 5.1% and for non-aboriginals is 15.7%
Lastly, being over the age of 65 for aboriginals is 2.9% and for non-aborigianls is 10.2%.
So as you can tell with the effects above the aboriginals have a harder time getting a jab, bachelors degree and do not even live as long as.
