    Jack Stilwell and his sister Rose, ages 16 and 5 years old, are left at home in Ireland while their parents immigrate to the US to start a new life and escape disease and starvarvation during The Potato Famine. Jack and Rose are left at home because their parents cannot afford to bring the whole family over to the US all at once. Once their parents have enough money, they will send for them.

    Jack and Rose are finally able to immigrate to the US. They take a ship to Ellis Island in hope of joining their parents in the US. The long voyage was very hard on Jack and Rose and the ship was very crowded to the point where nobody could sit down. The conditions of people on the ship are horrible and people are suffering from many diseases, but Jack and Rose hope to make it to Ellis Island safely and in good health.

    Jack and Rose finally make it to Ellis Island after a long, rough journey on the ship from home. Rose is suffering from tuberculosis which is preventing them from leaving Ellis Island. Jack is doing everything he can to help Rose with the little money they have. All they can do is hope Rose will survive.

    Rose's tuberculosis is finally gone. It was very hard for Jack to see her suffering like that, but he hopes it will never return. Since Rose's tuberculosis is gone, Jack and Rose finally get to leave Ellis Island and are now taking a train to meet their parents. Like the ship, the train has terrible conditions and is crowded with people suffering from illnesses. Jack and Rose have no money and are anxious to be reunited with their parents.

    After a very long journey, Jack and Rose have finally been reunited with their parents in the West. Everyone is very happy to see each other and Jack and Rose are helping their parents farm the land they now own. Life is hard and money is scarce, but the family hopes that they will earn money by selling their crops. Unfortunately, Rose is sick again, but this time it is with Pneumonia. She is getting worse by the day and everyone is praying she'll survive.

    The family has been very successful. They've sold their spring, summer and fall harvests which made them very wealthy. Sadly, Rose did not survive pneumonia. She did not have the strength to fight it and one day she was just gone. They are missing Rose, but focusing on how to produce healthy crops next year!
