  • Head Tax on Chinese immagrants increased

    The head tax on chinese immagrants was increased to $100 from the previous $50, as part of the Chinese exclusion act. This is important because we discriminated against people based on their ethnicity.
  • Immagration Act established

    The immagration act was established, which main goal was to "enshrine and reinforce measures of restriction and enforcement and the categories of prohibited immigrants were expanded." It basically gave them the power to do whatever they wanted with the immagrants. This is important because this put lots of power into the governments hands,and left alot of room for corruption.
  • Immagration office created

    The immagration office of Colonization is created. This is importnant because it is an advancementin the area of immagration
  • The Great Depression

    The great Despression has begun, and Canada is in some deep economic trouble. A law is passed forbidding immigration to anyone except for people with enough money to establish and maintain themselves on a farm. This is important because we started to make the amount of money you had weigh more on the immagrant scale.

    Immagrating was a dangerous and closely watched event.This is important beacuse we tightened the borders and startd to stop people based on their ethnicity.
  • New Immagration Act

    A new immgaration act was passed, allowing access to be denied on the grounds of nationality, ethnic group, geographical area of origin, peculiar customs, habits and modes of life, unsuitability with regard to the climate, probable inability to become readily assimilated. Homosexuals, drug addicts and drug traffickers were added to the prohibited classes. This is important beacuse it is violating many of or freedoms nowadays.
  • New immgaration Act, Part II

    A new Immigration Act came into effect which called for the government to plan in consultation with the provinces. Immigrants were divided into four categories – independents, family, assisted relatives and humanitarian. Prohibited categories were replaced by inadmissible categories. Prohibition against epileptics, imbeciles, persons guilty of crimes of moral turpitude, homosexuals and people with tuberculosis were removed. This is important because Canada took a step forward towards equality.
  • Charter of rights and Freedoms introduced

    The charter of rights and freedoms is introduced, which changes lots of the rights for immagrants. This is important because we started to protect the rights of immigrants.
  • The Singh decision

    Santam singh came immagrated into Canada claiming refugee status. He was denied the right to present his case in person or appeal to the governments decision. The supreme court ruled that it violated section 7 of the Charter or Rights and Freedoms, because Santam singh was in Canada. This is important because after this, the immagration accpetance rate went through the roof.
  • New refugee act

    The refugee act was made, introducing some heavy changes in favour of the immagrants and refugees. This is important because we took a step forward for the equality of our immagrants.
