The United States was the first nation to test a thermonuclear weapon, which is also known as a Hydrogen Bomb. The Ivy Mike was approximatly 1000 times more powerful than the previous technology. The reason is because this new bomb used a smaller nuclear fission, like the Atom bombs, to start a larger nuclear fussion.

The Soviet Union tested the most powerful nuclear weapon known. The bomb was on a parachute to give the piolet time to fly away. The blast yeilded around 50-58 megatons of TNT.
